In the beautiful journey of pregnancy and childbirth, every moment is special. Bringing a new life into this world is undoubtedly one of the most profound experiences a person can have. As expectant parents, you naturally seek the best care and support during this transformative time. One vital aspect that has gained attention in recent years is the role of a birth doula in providing emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after childbirth.

The Rise of Birth Doulas

What is a birth doula?

A birth doula is a trained professional who offers continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during, and just after childbirth. Their presence can significantly impact the birthing experience by providing comfort, reassurance, advocacy, and guidance throughout the process.

The Role of a Birth Doula:

  • Providing emotional support to the mother and her partner

  • Offering physical comfort measures during labor

  • Advocating for the mother's birth preferences

  • Providing evidence-based information and resources

  • Facilitating communication between the birthing team

  • Assisting with coping techniques during labor

  • Help with postpartum preparation and the transition into parenthood

Birth Doula and Insurance Coverage

Awareness of the benefits of doula support has grown and insurance companies are taking note. There is serious data showing that doula support can influence less interventions which equals less money insurance companies need to pau out. For these reasons, birth doula support will become more common and will eventually be covered by many insurance carriers. All of which means positive step towards ensuring that all expecting parents have access to the support they need during childbirth.

With this said, birth doulas are NON-MEDICAL professionals, and traditionally CANNOT bill insurance companies. We do not have medical codes that allow us to submit super bills. However, there are many other ways that your birth doula care can be covered by insurance.

Most common types of Birth Doula Insurance Coverage for birth doula support:

  • Health Care Benefits - Many insurance companies now acknowledge the tremendous benefits of hiring a birth doula. Depending on your insurance company, many families have birth doula support rolled into their insurance care. Of course, this is something that needs to be investigated by you to see if you have coverage and how much coverage you are provided with. Many of Labor of Love's clients have been able to receive partial or full reimbursement for their birth doula support through their insurance carrier. There does tend to be limitations on this type of coverage. Doulas always need to be certified and show proof. Reimbursement cost will vary too.

  • FSA/HSA funds - This is the most common way Labor of Love's clients have been able to get their birth doula care covered. Families that have flex spending or health savings accounts can use those funds to be reimbursed for our care if their FSA/HSA covers doula support. In the past, using your FSA/HSA credit card directly to pay for care typically didn't work as the company didn't recognize Labor of Love as a medical entity. Clients would need to submit their Labor of Love invoice to receive reimbursement of funds. However, most recently clients were able to use their FSA credit card to pay their invoice which makes this option very easy!

  • Carrot Fertility - Carrot Fertility has become increasingly more popular as employers add more and more benefits to attract employees. Carrot Fertility is an added option from certain employers and coverage a wild range of support from fertility care to menopause. Labor of Love clients that have Carrot Care have been able to be reimbursed for childbirth classes, prenatal visits, lactation support, postpartum hours, and birth doula support. To get reimbursed through Carrot Care, Labor of Love just needs to complete their online form and upload our doula certification and business information. They make it really easy for all parties involved.
