Creating Safety in Birth!
Throughout my 13 years in the birth business, supporting 1000s of families in labor, this is one thing I know to be true:
Women do not release their babies unless they feel safe!

As a birth doula, creating a supportive and safe space for women is fundamental to my work. A nurturing environment is crucial during childbirth. The birthing person must emotionally, mentally, AND physically feel safe to allow the release of their baby.
Creating safety in birth is paramount.
Here are ten ways to foster a supportive and comforting space:
Personalize the Space
Tailor the Environment: Incorporate personal items such as photos, mementos, or favorite blankets to make the space feel more comforting and familiar.
Comfort Items: Allow the birthing person to bring in items that help them feel relaxed, such as a favorite pillow or soothing music.
Ensure Privacy and Quiet
Limit Distractions: Create a quiet, private space free from unnecessary interruptions to help the birthing person feel at ease.
Sound Control: Use soft, calming music or nature sounds to enhance relaxation and mask any disruptive noises.
Adjust Lighting
Soft Lighting: Use dim, adjustable lighting to create a calm atmosphere. Avoid harsh or overly bright lights, which can be unsettling.

Facilitate Comfort and Mobility
Comfortable Seating: Provide options for comfortable seating and movement, such as birthing balls, cushions, or a supportive birthing chair.
Mobility: Ensure the space allows for easy movement, whether the birthing person wants to walk, sway, or use different positions.
Maintain a Clean and Organized Space
Tidiness: Keep the environment clean and organized to reduce stress and create a sense of order and calm.
Essential Supplies: Have all necessary supplies and equipment readily accessible to avoid unnecessary stress.
Create a Supportive Atmosphere
Encouraging Words: Foster a positive, supportive environment through reassuring and encouraging words from everyone present.
Respect Wishes: Respect the birthing person’s preferences and choices, ensuring they feel heard and supported.
Provide Emotional Support
Continuous Support: Offer continuous emotional support through a trusted doula, partner, or friend who can provide comfort and reassurance.
Active Listening: Be attentive and responsive to the birthing person’s needs and feelings throughout the process.
Use Comfort Measures
Pain Relief Options: Offer various comfort measures such as warm compresses, massage, or breathing techniques to help manage discomfort.
Hydration and Snacks: Ensure access to hydration and light snacks to maintain energy and comfort.

Facilitate Connection
Bonding Time: Allow time for bonding with the baby immediately after birth, including skin-to-skin contact and quiet, undisturbed moments.
Supportive Presence: Encourage the presence of supportive family members or friends who can offer additional emotional and physical support.
By incorporating these elements, you can help create a nurturing and supportive birth environment that promotes a positive and empowering experience for the birthing person. For more tips and trick, check out our Connected Childbirth Series.
